Volunteer Day with the Centre for Women
Join us as NAWIC Tampa Volunteers team up with the Centre for Women to donate their time to help one family in our community keep their home and its value by making critical home repairs after they suffered a house fire. Mr. And Mrs. Ronald Gastmann of Sulphur Springs experienced a horrific house fire last summer, losing their beloved dog and cat. Mr. Gastmann said, “Me and my wife were lucky to make it out alive.” The Gastmann’s had just celebrated having paid-off their home a few months before the fire. When they went to make a claim, they discovered the horrible reality that they were without homeowners insurance. The low-income couple turned to everyone they knew, and contacted every non-profit, governmental agency, and church for help. They were caught in a catch twenty-two. Since they didn’t live in their home (it was not habitable) there were not eligible for a reverse mortgage to try and renovate, nor were they eligible for any federal or local housing assistance, again, because they weren’t currently living in their home. However, the Centre for Women and other community organizations are joining efforts to provide a safe and healthy house for the Gastmann’s to call home, once again. New trusses, a new roof, new electric service, AC, some windows, insulation, and other life safety repairs have been or are being made. NAWIC Tampa is coming in to help with interior painting, baseboards, cleaning, and decorating to bring life back to the home that is currently an empty shell. This work day will also qualify for "Give-A-Day –Get-A Disney-Day" program. For more information or to volunteer, contact Tammy Criollo.
